Composer/sarod player Lisa Moskow has gained international recognition for her innovative work with the sarod, a 25-stringed lute from North India.

She has spent the last 25 years creating original compositions and unusual ensembles for this instrument. She has developed a new genre of sarod composition using non-traditional tunings and techniques, frequently combining the instrument with vocalizations and Iyrics.

  Lisa Moskow performs these pieces as a soloist and with a variety of accompanying instruments, including harp, cello,didgeridoo and a wide selection of  hand percussion.

Lisa Moskow has toured extensively throughout Europe, the U.S. and Mexico. She makes reqular appearances on radio and TV and has worked in theatre, film, dance and multi-media productions.

She is an author/ publisher member  
of ASCAP and has received two awards from them.

Lisa Moskow has been a member of the San Francisco Bay Area composer group MOSAIC since 1991.

 

Educational Background:  

North Indian classical music training - 15 years sarod and vocal with Ali Akbar Khan; vocal lessons with Jesraj and G.S. Sachdev; two years of tabla with Shankar Ghosh and Zakir Hussain [1969-1985).  
Traditional western music studies at Laney College,  Oakland - piano with Ed Kelly [1981-1983). Played in the Mills College Gamelan Orchestra with Lou Harrison and Jodie Diamond (1984-1985). 
Studied gamelan one month in Peliatan, Bali, Indonesia [1987). Violin studies and chamber orchestra at the College of Marin, Kentfield, CA. [1992-1995).  
Teaching workshops Indian music for western musicians [since 1993).

These Still Waters combines the Japanese shakuhachi and hischirikki (flute and oboe) of Genji Ito with sarod. 
Songs for Sarod, a collection of 2-part pieces for sarod, presents a unique context for modal and harmonic ideas.  
Passages from India contains her melodies and improvisations in the classical Indian format.  
Rites of the Dolphin is a collaboration of the sarod with piano and cello.  
Yearning, the combined effort of sound sculptor Robert Rich and Lisa Moskow, is available  
on the  Hearts of Space/Fathom label.  
sojourn showcases the Jazz/lndian fusion  works of Lisa Moskow and clarinetist Hermann Bühler.
